The Practical Moving Checklist
A week-by-week countdown so the actual move doesn't ruin all the careful planning you did to get there.

Moving day is the final boss of the home-buying or renting process. A little structure in the four weeks before makes a huge difference.
Four weeks out
- Get quotes from movers (or book a van). Confirm insurance.
- Start using up freezer and pantry food.
- Notify your landlord, lender, employer and HR about your moving date.
Two weeks out
- Set up internet and utilities at the new address for the move-in date.
- Forward your post.
- Update your address with banks, insurers, government and subscriptions.
- Schedule a final inspection or check-out with your landlord if renting.
The week of
- Pack an 'essentials' box: bedding, towels, chargers, toiletries, cleaning supplies, kettle.
- Take meter readings and time-stamped photos of every room you're leaving.
- Confirm parking and access at both addresses.
Move-in day
- Photograph every room of the new home before you bring anything in.
- Test the heating, hot water, and major appliances.
- Find the stop-cock, fuse box, and any alarm panels.
- Sleep early. Unpacking can wait.
